How to Keep Mattress Topper From Sliding?
Many people, between 30% and 48% of older adults, have trouble sleeping at night. If you struggle to rest at night, just know you aren’t alone.
One reason you may be having a hard time getting comfortable is that your mattress topper keeps shifting around and moving. If you’re having to get up in the middle of the night to put your topper back in place, you’re probably not getting a good night’s sleep.
There are a few things you can do to fix this problem. In this article, we will tell you why your mattress topper is moving and how you can stop it from happening.
Reasons It’s Sliding
Let’s first talk about why the mattress topper is moving. You may be able to make a few minor changes. If you have children or pets and they are constantly getting up and down from your bed, they may be moving the topper.
It’s crucial that the topper is the correct size for your bed; one that is too big or too small will be more likely to move. A mattress cover is a great investment, however, it can cause your mattress topper to slide if it doesn’t have any texture.
Get Tighter Sheets
Before you start investing a bunch of money into fixing this issue, try getting new sheets first. It’s important that you use a fitted sheet that has deep pockets.
The new sheet should fit over the topper and the mattress and should still be able to tuck under the mattress on all four sides. A tighter sheet will hold the mattress topper in place and it’s an easy fix.
Use Safety Pins
The most affordable mattress hack is to use safety pins to attach the topper to your mattress. You’ll put five or six pins on each side to hold it in place. If you have a longer bed, you may need a few extras.
This solution is easy to do and you can remove the pins whenever you need to clean between them. There are a few things you need to keep in mind before you use this method.
If you don’t put the safety pins in the correct spot and your mattress rips, your warranty likely won’t cover it. A safety pin could also damage your topper if it’s foam, so be sure to put a cover on it. Lastly, pin them facedown so if they come undone you won’t get injured.
Sheet Straps or Sheet Suspenders
Mattress topper straps can be extremely helpful. Typically these straps are used to secure sheets, but if you get thicker ones they will hold the topper still too. You can run the bands vertically or horizontally.
You’ll attach the clip to one side of the topper, run it under the bed, and clip it to the other side. Once you have it in place, you won’t even know it’s there.
Purchase A New Mattress
Buying a mattress is not always possible as it can be very expensive. However, you won’t regret investing in a new one if you get better sleep.
Many people overestimate how long their mattress will last. If you need a mattress topper to sleep comfortably, that may be your sign to purchase a new mattress.
Duct Tape or Carpet Tape
If you have duct tape at home, you can use it to hold the mattress topper in place. However, duct tape can be harsh and will likely leave residue behind.
Carpet tape may be the better option if you have it. Unlike duct tape, carpet tape is double-sided and won’t be visible. You can put it between the mattress and the topper and no one will ever know.
Non-Slip Mat
You can also purchase a rubber mat to act as a mattress gripper. You’ll place the rubber or non-slip mat between the mattress and the topper. This solution works great with foam mattresses.
It’s important that the mat is the same size as your mattress. It won’t be as effective if it only covers half of it. If you have a slippery mattress cover, this will allow you to keep it on.
Purchase a Non-Slip Cover
A slippery mattress topper is a common issue and some are even made with non-slip components. You can find some that come with straps already built-in so you don’t have to buy extras.
You may be able to find one that has rubber grips on it to reduce slipping.
Velcro System
If you’ve ever done a home project, it’s likely that you’ve heard of velcro stripes and how versatile they can be. It may take a little time to set up, so be patient.
First, you’ll want to ensure you have enough strips to hold the entire mattress. There is a soft side and a sharp side, which you can attach either to your mattress or topper.
Once you have the soft side placed correctly, you’ll place the sharp side going in the opposite direction. This will ensure it is secured tightly and won’t move.
